Queering the Compass

The Queering the Compass project promotes the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) of 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities by advancing the knowledge and skills needed to navigate their SRH care and by improving the capacity, knowledge, and skills of the healthcare/service providers who serve them. Using a collaborative approach, CBRC works alongside six regional delivery partners (see list below), 2S/LGBTQIA+ community members across Canada, and healthcare/service providers to develop and deliver a range of initiatives including knowledge exchange resources, community programming, and policy that focus on addressing sexual and reproductive health inequities across Canada. Recognizing the diverse factors that contribute to sexual and reproductive health and well-being for 2S/LGBTQIA+ people, we extend our focus beyond sexually transmitted infections to address topics such as gender-affirming care, pleasure, sex and disability, and family planning.

To further our goal of improving the SRH of 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities, we have expanded CBRC’s existing community health leadership programs, Totally Outright and Pivot, to include new community education content that is more inclusive of broader 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities (e.g., 2S/LGBTQIA+ youth, seniors, and racialized people),addressing a wider range of sexual and reproductive health care needs. Specific knowledge resources for Two-Spirit, queer, and trans Indigenous folks is a key focus of this project, and the Two-Spirit team at CBRC leads the coordination and delivery of annual Two-Spirit health gatherings.

Our overall approach to building the capacity, knowledge, and skills of healthcare/service providers include in-person and online training, health promotion resources, and policy initiatives that focus on addressing gaps in 2S/LGBTQIA+ SRH care.This multi-faceted approach leverages CBRC’s research expertise along with the lived and professional experiences of 2S/LGBTQIA+ communities, community-based organizations, and healthcare/service providers. By the end of this project, CBRC would have produced lasting networks, community programming, provider training resources, and key policy and knowledge mobilization resources that help create a more equitable sexual and reproductive health landscape for 2S/LGBTQIA+ people across the country.

Online Module 1:  Intersectional Affirming Care

Intersectional Affirming Care explores affirming care as a central principle of service provision and practice. This course focuses on preparing and empowering service providers with the practical skills and knowledge needed to effectively deliver services to 2S/LGBTQIA+ community members. Participants will engage in self-driven activities about affirmation and affirming care, which include opportunities to critically reflect on systemic and personal attitudes prevalent in healthcare systems.

Online Module 2: Confronting Ableism, Stigma and Bias in Sexual and Reproductive Health Care

Confronting Ableism, Stigma and Bias in Sexual and Reproductive Health Care highlights some of the pitfalls and challenges of service provision by centering the conversation around ableism, stigma and bias, highlighting different embodied experiences at the intersection of queerness and sexual and reproductive health care. Learners are encouraged to critically reflect on their service provision practices through intentional self-assessments and dialogue prompts on the importance of challenging ableism and ableist practices in healthcare.

Online Module 3: Weaving the Threads of Inclusive Care for 2S/LGBTQIA+ people

  • Positionality (bias, cultural humility, and intersectionality)

Online Module 4: Abortion is Queer Reproductive Justice

Abortion is Queer Reproductive Justice is for service providers and healthcare professionals to learn more about abortion access as reproductive justice as it pertains to 2SLGBTQIA+ people and systemically marginalized communities. The module moves through the roots of foundations of the abortion landscape in Canada, followed by an exploration of the ways abortion is connected to the pillars of reproductive justice. Participants will then learn ways to “queer up” abortion care in their practices and have actionable steps of how to be advocates or providers of queer affirming abortion care.

 

Our six regional delivery partners across the nation are:

Queer & Trans Health Collective (QTHC) in AB, Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC) in MB, YouthCO in BC, Halifax Sexual Health Centre in NS, Quadrangle & Planned Parenthood in NL, and Gay Men’s Sexual Health Alliance (GMSH) in ON.
